The Election Commission of India has declared results for 542 of the 543 Lok Sabha constituencies, with the BJP winning 240 seats and the Congress 99

Several heads of state and leaders from various walks of life have congratulated Prime Minister Narendra Modi after the BJP-led NDA coalition managed to secure a simple majority in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.

The BJP, whose candidates had contested in the name of Modi, won or was ahead in 240 seats to emerge as the single largest party in the 543-member Lok Sabha. With the support of its other allies, the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) reached the 272-majority mark.

UKRAINE

Welcoming the successful holding of the world’s largest democratic elections in India, Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskyy congratulated PM Modi, the BJP, and the BJP-led NDA on the third consecutive victory in India’s parliamentary elections.

“I wish the people of India peace and prosperity, and I hope for continued cooperation between our countries. India and Ukraine share common values and a rich history. May our partnership continue to thrive, bringing progress and mutual understanding for our nations,” he said. “Everyone in the world recognizes these significance and weight of India’s role in global affairs. It is critical that we all work together to ensure a just peace for all nations. In this regard, we also look forward to seeing India attend the Peace Summit,” he added.

Singapore

“With the NDA #Modi win for a third term, we look forward to #Bharat marching ahead with Speed, Scale, Scope and Standards. Heartiest Congratulations,” Singapore High Commissioner Simon Wong wrote on social media platform X.

The Singapore envoy’s post came hours after the country’s Prime Minister also wished Modi. “Congratulations @narendramodi on the historic victory by the NDA for the third consecutive term. Look forward to working with you to deepen the Singapore-India partnership and to celebrate the 60th anniversary of diplomatic ties next year,” Singapore PM Lawrence Wong said in a post on X.

Sri Lanka

“I extend my warmest felicitations to the BJP-led NDA on its victory demonstrating the confidence of the Indian people in the progress and prosperity under the leadership of PM Narendra Modi,” the Sri Lankan president wrote on social media platform X. As the closest neighbour Sri Lanka looks forward to further strengthening the partnership with India, he added.

Thanking Wickremesinghe for his wishes, Modi said, “Thank you @RW_UNP. I look forward to our continued cooperation on the India-Sri Lanka Economic Partnership.” Responding to the executive president of Sri Lanka Mahinda Rajapaksa, Modi said, “Thank you for your wishes, my friend @PresRajapaksa. As the India-Sri Lanka partnership charts new frontiers, look forward to your continued support.” In his response to Sri Lanka’s Leader of Opposition Sajith Premadasa’s wishes, Modi said, “Our relations with Sri Lanka are special and uniquely fraternal. We are committed to further strengthen our unbreakable bonds in keeping with our neighbourhood first policy!”

Maldives

Maldives President Mohamed Muizzu also congratulated Modi and voiced his desire to work with the Indian prime minister to advance the bilateral ties.

“Congratulations to Prime Minister @narendramodi and the BJP and BJP-led NDA, on the success in the 2024 Indian General Election, for the third consecutive term. “I look forward to working together to advance our shared interests in pursuit of shared prosperity and stability for our two countries,” Muizzu, whose statements and actions have hit bilateral ties since the pro-China leader assumed office in November last year.

Italy

On Tuesday, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni congratulated Modi for winning a third consecutive term and said she will continue to work together with the Indian government to deepen ties between Italy and India.

“Congratulations to Narendra Modi on the new electoral victory and my warmest wishes for good work. (It is) certain that we will continue to work together to strengthen the friendship that unites Italy and India and consolidate cooperation on the various issues that bind us, for the well-being of our nations and our peoples,” Meloni said.

PM Modi thanked the Italian PM and committed to deepening the strategic partnership between the two countries. “Thank you for your kind wishes PM @GiorgiaMeloni. We remain committed to deepening India-Italy strategic partnership which is underpinned by shared values and interests. Looking forward to working together for global good,” he said.

Nepal

Nepal Prime Minister ‘Prachanda’ congratulated his Indian counterpart on the electoral success of his party-led alliance. “Congratulations to PM @narendramodi on the electoral success of BJP and NDA in the Lok Sabha elections for the third consecutive term. We are happy to note the successful completion of the world’s largest democratic exercise with enthusiastic participation of the people of India,” he said in a post on X. Replying to the Nepalese prime minister, Modi said, “Thank you Prime Minister @cmprachanda ji for your kind wishes. Look forward to continued cooperation to strengthen India-Nepal friendship.”

Mauritius

Mauritius Prime Minister Pravind Kumar Jugnauth congratulated Modi on his historic win. “Congratulations Prime Minister Modi Ji @narendramodi on your laudable victory for a historic third term. Under your helm, the largest democracy will continue to achieve remarkable progress. Long live the Mauritius-India special relationship,” Jugnauth posted on X. In response, Modi said “Thank you Prime Minister @KumarJugnauth ji for your heartfelt message. Mauritius plays a crucial role at the intersection of our Neighbourhood First policy, Vision SAGAR and our commitment for the Global South.” “I look forward to working together to further deepen our special partnership,” he added.

United States

On Tuesday, the United States underlined India’s parliamentary elections as the “largest exercise of democracy in history,” while commending the Indian government and its voters for completing the electoral process.

“On behalf of the United States, we want to commend the government of India and voters there for successfully completing and participating in such a massive electoral undertaking, and we look forward to seeing final results,” State Department Spokesperson Matthew Miller said during his daily news briefing. Miller stressed the US stance on not commenting on electoral winners and losers worldwide. “I’m also not going to comment on winners and losers in elections as is our case around the world. What is important for us and what we have seen over the past six weeks is the largest exercise of democracy in history, as the Indian people came to the polls,” he added

Bhutan

Bhutan’s Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay also congratulated Modi and NDA for the historic third consecutive win and said he looked forward to working closely with him. “Congratulations to my friend PM @narendramodi ji and NDA for the historic 3rd consecutive win in the world’s biggest elections. As he continues to lead Bharat to great heights, I look forward to working closely with him to further strengthen the relations between our 2 countries,” he wrote on X.

In response, Modi said, “Thank you my friend Prime Minister @tsheringtobgay for your warm wishes. Bharat-Bhutan relations will continue to grow strength to strength.” Modi also thanked the presidential candidate of Sri Lanka Sarath Fonseka. “Thank you @sf2024_sl. Our ties with Sri Lanka are special. We will continue to work with the people of Sri Lanka to further deepen and strengthen it,” he said on ‘X’.

Barbados

Barbados Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley also congratulated PM Modi. “Congratulations to Prime Minister @narendramodi on his victory in India’s elections, which has seen him secure an unprecedented third term. Under his leadership, India has become a global leader and ally to Barbados and the Caribbean region. Let’s continue to build together! Jamaica Prime Minister Andrew Holness also wished Modi on microblogging site X. “Congratulations to Prime Minister @narendramodi as he prepares to embark on a historic third term as India’s head of government,” he said.

Other Leaders/Personalities

Congratulating PM Modi on his third consecutive electoral victory, a top American corporate leader exuded confidence about the positive Indo-US momentum continuing. “Congratulations to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who has captured his third term during India’s general election. Under his leadership, India has made tremendous progress economically and with digitisation,” Cisco Chairman Emeritus John Chambers said in a social media post. He added, “Keep an eye on India — I have no doubt this positive momentum will continue.”

Mary Millben

African-American singer Mary Millben described Modi’s third successive electoral victory as a “historic day” for India and the world. “The reelection of my friend, His Excellency Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the dawn of a New India,” she said in a video message.

“Let me be one of the first from America to congratulate you on your reelection, Prime Minister Modi. I am so happy for you. You are the chosen leader for India, chosen by God and again by the people of Bharat. You have proven wrong those in the West who questioned your longevity and confirmed across the world what we have all known to be true — you are the best leader for India, the US-India relationship, and for the stability of the world,” Millben said. “As you enter your historic third term, I hope you will continue to be God’s ambassador as you lead. For, in service to God, you will not fail the people of India, the precious 1.4 billion lives you have been chosen to serve,” she said.

Tulsi Gabbard

Former US Congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard also congratulated Modi. “Congratulations to Narendra Modi on yet another election victory. As the world’s oldest and largest democracies, I look forward to continuing to work with you around our people’s common goals and mutual interests,” she said.

Husain Haqqani, a former Pakistani ambassador to the US, congratulated the people of India. “Congratulations to the people of India for going through their 18th parliamentary elections since 1947 and never having to deal with allegations of massive rigging or stolen mandates. That is commitment to democracy,” he said in a social media post.
