The smaller, rugged SUV that was previewed at the Prado's launch will be known as the Land Cruiser FJ.

Japanese multinational car manufacturer Toyota is currently working on a big extension of its Land Cruiser lineup, which now includes three tough Sport Utility Vehicles (SUVs).

During the Land Cruiser Prado’s premiere event (August 2, 2023), the company unveiled an entirely new Land Cruiser Electric Vehicle (EV) and hinted at a smaller, rugged SUV. Furthermore, Toyota recently registered a trademark for the Land Cruiser FJ brand in Japan. Meanwhile, reports state that the Land Cruiser FJ moniker will be applied to a “smaller rugged SUV” that is in the works.

Toyota Land Cruiser FJ: Details on the Name

FJ has been a renowned name for Toyota, with most Land Cruiser versions sporting the FJ suffix, beginning with the FJ20 in 1955. The last time Toyota used the FJ moniker on an SUV was for the retro-styled “FJ Cruiser” that was manufactured and sold from 2006 until 2022.

Reportedly, the Land Cruiser FJ will continue to have retro-style design elements and will most likely be a manufacturing version of the Toyota Compact Cruiser SUV concept that was presented last year. Except for the C-shaped headlight characteristic, the teaser fits the upright and boxy design of the Compact Cruiser concept.

The platform on which this SUV will be built is currently unknown. Toyota presently has two ladder-frame platforms that serve as the foundation for its SUV lineup. The Land Cruiser 300 and Land Cruiser Prado, as well as pickups like the new Tacoma, are built on the more sophisticated TNGA-F design, whereas the Hilux and Fortuner are built on the slightly older IMV architecture.

In October, Toyota unveiled the IMV 0 ladder-frame platform, which will debut with the Hilux Champ and will be expanded to include other body types in the future. According to the photos released by the brand, the IMV 0 concept appears to be pretty similar to the Toyota Rangga concept that was recently shown in Indonesia.

Toyota IMV 0: All You Need To Know

The Toyota IMV 0 is described as a highly customizable pickup truck that allows “owners to participate in the process of creating mobility.” This idea, inspired by the original FJ40 Land Cruiser, is available in a variety of body types, including a safari-ready camper, a mountain rescue ambulance, a street food kiosk, and an off-roader. The idea is built on a variant of Toyota’s ladder-frame IMV platform, which also underlies other Toyota cars produced in India, such as the Innova Crysta and Hilux.
