In India, there are many places and sites that have been excavated as archaeologically rich areas. The Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) is responsible for conducting such excavations and helps maintain sites that are of national importance. They hold an archaeological survey to understand the types of remains that are available in the area and protect them. They are also responsible for setting up site museums. The Tamil Nadu Department of Archaeology has been quite active in excavations of various artefacts in the state.
Last year, an excavation was conducted by the department in the Vijayakarisalkulam reservoir near the Vembakottai district and they found a number of artefacts from there. As per reports, during the first phase, they excavated around 3,600 types of objects and remains, which have been kept in a different hall in the same area.
Now, it has been revealed that after the department conducted the second phase of excavation, they found a new set of flint jars, smoking pipes and other unique objects from the excavation site. The excavation of these unique objects has intrigued historians and archaeologists in the state. Currently, they are doing their research to try to understand the dates of the objects and the activities related to them.
Bhaskar Ponnuswamy, who is the director of the excavation project, revealed that the excavation work for the second phase will be completed by the end of the month, and then everything will be documented. He also added that the third phase of excavation is expected to begin next year after the approval of the Central government.
