Yashasvi Jaiswal was part of India’s playing XI in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024, but he didn’t get a chance to play in any of the eight matches. Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma opened for India in the shortest format megaevent, which was played in the West Indies and USA last month.
After India’s title win, Rohit and Kohli announced their retirement from T20Is, which left the door open for Jaiswal to play as an opener, and in the last four matches, he proved his worth by playing impactful knocks.
He remained unbeaten on 93 runs from 53 balls in the fourth T20I against Zimbabwe on July 13 and then scored back-to-back sixes on the first two balls of the fifth T20I (July 14) to become only the second batter in the world to achieve the feat.
He opened for India in the first T20I against Sri Lanka as well on Saturday (July 27) in Pallekele and scored 40 runs from just 21 balls to help the Suryakumar Yadav-led side get off to a flying start. After playing a big role in India’s 43-run win in the series opener, Jaiswal was engaged in a post-match interaction with former Indian cricketers Ajay Jadeja and Ashish Nehra, during which Nehra hilariously trolled the star batter.
In a video going viral on the internet, Nehra said that if Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma were still playing in T20Is, then Jaiswal would have been playing all destructive shots inside the nets.
“Ajay Jadeja asked you what’s the difference when Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma were there (to open in 20Is). According to me, there is just one difference. If Virat and Rohit were still playing this format, then whatever strokes we saw from you today, you would have played those in the nets. Now you are getting to play those shots in the match because they (Virat and Rohit) are not there,” said Nehra.

Jaiswal needs 7 runs
Jaiswal will be in action for India on Sunday (July 28) again during the 2nd T20I and will have a chance to become the first batter in the world to score 1000 runs in international cricket in 2024. In 12 matches played so far across formats, Jaiswal has 993 runs to his name.
