Arshad Nadeem entered the history books on Thursday (August 8) by becoming the first athlete from Pakistan to win a gold medal in the Olympics. The 27-year-old Nadeem broke the Olympic record in his second attempt by touching a distance of 92.97 m to win a historic yellow metal in the men’s javelin throw final at the Paris Olympics. Nadeem, who finished fifth in the Tokyo Olympics, in fact twice crossed the 90-meter mark on Thursday to finish ahead of India’s Neeraj Chopra and Grenada’s Anderson Peters.
Arshad’s gold medal win on Thursday also helped him end Pakistan’s 32-year-old long wait for an Olympic medal. Before Arshad, Pakistan’s last Olympic medal came during the 1992 Barcelona games, when the men’s hockey team finished third. Arshad is overall the third athlete from Pakistan to win a medal in the Olympics.
Arshad’s historic win in Paris is being celebrated by Pakistani fans around the globe. Taking note of the special achievement by the 27-year-old athlete, star Pakistani batter and T20I captain Babar Azam also took to X (formerly Twitter) to give his warm wishes to Nadeem. But he made a factual error in his post, and for that, he is now getting trolled on social media.
In his viral tweet, Babar wrote, “After 30 long years, the gold is back in Pakistan! Huge congratulations to @arshadnadeem29 for this incredible achievement. You’ve made the entire nation proud.”

Babar congratulated Nadeem for bringing gold back to Pakistan after 30 years, but fans were quick to remind him that Nadeem is the first ever athlete to win a gold for Pakistan in the Olympics, so he can’t be bringing back gold after 30 years. In addition to the factual error, Babar also tagged Arshad Nadeem incorrectly in his tweet.
Pakistan has won three gold medals at the Olympics, but all of them came in the men’s hockey competition. Their last title win was way back in 1984, which is 40 years ago.
Apart from Babar, star Pakistani cricketers like Wasim Akram, Waqar Younis, Haris Rauf, and Shoaib Akhtar also took to X to congratulate Nadeem for the historic achievement.
