A day after India’s historic win in the West Indies, BCCI secretary Shah announced prize money of INR 125 crore for the team for wining the T20 World Cup 2024.

BCCI Secretary Jay Shah has announced a grand prize money for Team India for winning the T20 World Cup 2024. The Rohit Sharma-led side clinched a thrilling 7-run win against South Africa at Kensington Oval to be crowned as the new T20 Word Champions on Saturday.

A day after India’s historic win in the West Indies, BCCI secretary Shah announced prize money of INR 125 crore for the team for its unbeaten streak in the showpiece event. Taking to microblogging site X on Sunday, he lauded the Indian cricket team for showcasing ‘exceptional talent, determination, and sportsmanship’ throughout the tournament.

BCCI Secretary Jay Shah’s Statement to Media

Shah, in an official statement, lauded India’s efforts and congratulated the unit led by Rohit Sharma for becoming the first team in the history of the ICC T20 World Cup to win the tournament unbeaten.

“Today, I stand before you, along with all of India, filled with immense pride and admiration for Team India’s remarkable achievements on the global stage. This team truly embodies a rising, vibrant, and resilient India, asserting its rightful place in the world of cricket. I am delighted that, as the governing body of the sport in India, the BCCI has played a part in this team’s success through our relentless focus on identifying, grooming, and nurturing the right talent. Our commitment to grassroots development and talent cultivation is bearing fruit in ways that fill us all with immense pride.” Shah said in a statement addressed to the media.

“Under the exceptional leadership of Rohit Sharma, this team has shown remarkable resolve and resilience, becoming the first team in the history of the ICC T20 World Cup to win the tournament unbeaten. They have faced and silenced their critics with stellar performances time and again. Their journey has been nothing short of inspirational, and today, they join the ranks of the greats, achieving something truly special that brings immense pride and joy to all Indians.

“It fills me with great pride to speak about such an extraordinary team. However, it is this team that has made us all proud with their dedication, hard work, and unyielding spirit. Led by Rohit Sharma, and ably assisted by Virat Kohli, Jasprit Bumrah and others they have fulfilled the dreams and aspirations of 1.4 billion Indians,” he added.

Earlier, BCCI President Roger Binny said it will take another two-three years for the Indian T20 team to ‘come into its own,’ given the void that Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma’s international retirement from the format will create.

“There is so much talent in the IPL. A lot of cricketers are coming through but it is going to take some time to bridge the gap (after the retirement of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli from T20Is),” Binny was quoted as saying by PTI.

“They have contributed so much. It’s going to take time. We will probably see in the next two to three years, the team coming back into its own without them,” he added.

Rohit leaves T20Is with 4231 runs from 159 matches, having made five hundreds and 32 fifties. In 125 T20I matches, Kohli scored 4188 runs at an average of 48.69 with 122 being his highest. That was his only T20 century – coming against Afghanistan in September 2022.
