Sanju Samson Equals Shane Warne's Captaincy Record to Become Joint-most Successfull RR Captain
Sanju Samson continues to show his quality as a leader having guided Rajasthan Royals into the second qualifier of IPL 2024.

Sanju Samson has drawn level with a record of the late Shane Warne as he led Rajasthan Royals to a comprehensive win over Royal Challengers Bengaluru in the IPL 2024 Eliminator on Wednesday night.

The win in Ahmedabad marked Samson’s 31st victory as the captain of the franchise. Before the wicketkeeper-batter, legendary players like Warne, Rahul Dravid, Shane Watson and Steve Smith have held the leadership role in RR.

In terms of achieving the most success as a skipper, Samson is now on the same level as Warne, who was the captain of the Royals in the inaugural title-winning season in 2008.

The spin-bowling maestro was in charge of Rajasthan Royals till 2011 and recorded 31 victories during that period. Dravid took over the reins from Warne in 2012 and led the team for two seasons.

Despite not winning the IPL title, Dravid was quite successful as the captain. He led his team to the Champions League final in 2013 but failed to overcome Mumbai Indians. He recorded the best win percentage (57.50) as the RR skipper, winning 23 out of 40 matches.

Following Dravid, RR assigned the leadership role to Watson and Ajinkya Rahane.

Steve Smith came onto the scene midway through the 2019 IPL season and replaced Rahane. The Aussie batter led RR in 27 matches and emerged victorious in 15 of them.

The Aussie remained in the position till 2021 before passing the captaincy baton to Samson.

Samson has already proven his leadership credentials.

RR made a roaring start to the ongoing campaign but failed to replicate the dominance in the second half of the league stage. Following four back-to-back defeats, RR finished third on the points table.

Samson and Co. put up a dominant performance in the Eliminator clash against RCB. The inaugural IPL champions restricted their opponents to 172/8.

For RR, Ravichandran Ashwin and Avesh Khan spearheaded the bowling attack, picking two and three wickets respectively.

The batters were equally impressive during the chase. Despite losing a few wickets at crucial moments, RR managed to reach the target comfortably with one over to spare. They will now face Sunrisers Hyderabad in Qualifier 2, scheduled to take place at Chepauk on May 24.
