Sanjay Manjrekar feels that Rohit Sharma is adding extra pressure on him as he is trying too hard to create an impact as a skipper. Rohit has been going through a lean patch with the bat in red-ball cricket. He has yet to score a fifty in the last eight Test innings as he flopped with the bat in the first two Tests against England.
His captaincy also came under the scanners in the first Test as he turned a bit defensive as captain in the second innings of England in Hyderabad.
“I just wonder whether Rohit Sharma is getting too caught up in trying to make an impact as a leader. It’s got to be Rohit Sharma the batter first and then the captain because when you’re captain, most things are beyond your control,” Manjrekar told ESPNCricinfo.
In Hyderabad, India suffered their fourth Test defeat at home in the past decade as England outclassed the host courtesy of a brilliant 196-run knock and a sensational spell by debutant Tom Hartley on Day 4 where he picked a seven-wicket haul.
However, they bounced back in Vizag to register a thumping 106-run win to level the five-match series 1-1.
Manjrekar advised Rohit to hold the words of legendary World Cup-winning captain MS Dhoni.
“Try and do the right things and hold the words of MS Dhoni. You do the process and wait for things to happen, but batting is something that’s within his control very much,” the former India batter added.
Manjrekar further suggested that Rohit should take a walk back to memory lane and try to replicate what he did in the Test series against England and Australia in the past at home.
“If Rohit Sharma becomes the Rohit Sharma for a couple of years back, especially the one that we saw in England in that full series would be great. The Rohit Sharma that we saw in the first Test match in the home series against Australia. He’s got to go back to where he looked like a batter who looked supreme in Test matches. We want Rohit Sharma getting runs.” Manjrekar concluded.
