No one can forget the swagger and the indomitable pace of one Curtly Ambrose. The 6’7″ West Indian mammoth who would strike pure fear into the hearts of any batter that stood opposing him.

Today, the man who personified the halcyon days of Test and ODI cricket for so many presents as an amiable, even endearing figure, as an ambassador for the 2024 T20 World Cup taking place in the USA and the Caribbean.

At the peak of his powers in the 1990s, the great Ambrose relished his battles against the likes of Sachin Tendulkar and Steve Waugh.

Now, at 60 years of age, when asked about batters in modern cricket that he would have liked to test himself against, Ambrose stated he would have loved to face off against the likes of Virat Kohli, Joe Root, Babar Azam and Kane Williamson.

“When I played, I thrived on challenges. In every team, there were at least a handful of great batsmen. And you know, with a reputation as well. So for me, they tend to bring the best out of me when I play.

“To dismiss them, gives me more pleasure than dismissing numbers 9, 10, 11. You talk about these guys, they are great players (Kohli and Co). It would be nice to play against them but having said that, I’ve played against some greats in my time as well,” he said.

Well, only one out of the four batters Ambrose named remain in contention to compete for the current T20 World Cup, and that is none other than the talisman Indian batter, Virat Kohli.

Kohli though has had a tumultuous campaign so far in the T20 World Cup for India, struggling to get going in all three of his innings of 1, 4, and 0 so far.

But, both Kohli himself and India will be looking on at the talisman batter to once again find his footing and lead the way up front with Rohit Sharma, as India begin their Super Eight stages with an encounter against a fiery Afghanistan side, that has come to life in this edition of the T20 World Cup, on Thursday.
