A student’s final marks in class 12 must include their performance in classes 9, 10, and 11, according to a report submitted by NCERT’s PARAKH to the Education Ministry. It further stated that for counting the final marks, it should give 15 per cent weightage to class 9 performance, 20 per cent weightage to class 10, 25 per cent to class 11, and 40 per cent to class 12, reported Indian Express.
The report was submitted following discussions with 32 school boards over the last year. The PARAKH report suggested that evaluation across classes 9 to 12 must be based on both formative (class assessments, group discussions, projects) and summative assessments (final exams).
It added that for counting the final score in class 9, it should give 70 per cent weightage to formative assessments and 30 per cent to summative assessments. In the case of class 10, the final score must give equal weightage to formative and summative assessments, that is, 50-50. The report also stated 40 per cent weightage to formative and 60 per cent to summative assessments must be given while counting class 11 marks. In the case of class 12, it should be 30 per cent and 70 per cent respectively, the news agency reported.
Furthermore, in a meeting held with all state-wise school boards, it was suggested by the states that for counting the final marks in class 10, as much as 40 per cent of class 9 score and 60 per cent of class 10 be included, the news agency report added. While for class 12, as much as 40 per cent of the score from class 11 and 60 per cent from class 12 be counted, the news agency stated. The final decision will likely be taken after a meeting with the remaining school boards in August.
Not just weightage to final marks, PARAKH also suggested that the assessments must have credit scores. According to the report, 40 credits must be assigned to each class 9 and 10, and 44 credits to each class 11 and 12.
