Real Madrid’s desire to sign Bayer Leverkusen midfielder Florian Wirtz has been one of the key talking points in the transfer market. It is now being learnt that Real Madrid firmly believe they will beat FC Barcelona in acquiring the German international, should he decide to leave Bundesliga. After an incredible series of performances last season, the 21-year-old has been heavily linked with a move away from Leverkusen. Now a report from Catalan news outlet SPORT45 has emerged claiming, “Barcelona have been keeping a close eye on him and want to secure his services in the future.” But the outlet recognised that it won’t be easy for the Catalans due to their financial situation. Their report further stated, “Those close to Real Madrid believe that they will secure his services next season.”
Real Madrid reportedly share a ‘very good’ business relationship with Bayer Leverkusen. This resulted in the Los Blancos believing they could convince the Florian Wirtz to join them. Wirtz is now one of the three players on Real Madrid’s roadmap ahead of the upcoming 2024-25 season. He joins French centre-back Leny Yoro and Canadian left-back sensation Alphonso Davies as the club’s potential targets. Leverkusen’s CEO Fernando Carro had earlier insisted that the club would not entertain any offer less than €150 million for the young talent. Real Madrid also face some heat from Premier League giants Manchester City and Manchester United in signing the player.
One of the world’s most in-demand prospects, Florian Wirtz emerged as an impactful player in the Bundesliga last season. He played a crucial role in Bayer Leverkusen’s undefeated league run. Acting as one of Xabi Alonso’s main men, Wirtz notched 18 goals in 49 games for Bayer Leverkusen. He even provided 20 assists across all competitions for the German side. Wirtz also guided his team to multiple titles, having won the domestic double including the Bundesliga and DFB-Pokal. He also helped Leverkusen reach the Europa League 2024 final before losing 0-3 to Atalanta at the Aviva Stadium in May earlier this year.
Florian Wirtz proved to be one of Germany’s star players during the ongoing Euro 2024. He notched and put up a great performance in the quarter-finals against Spain. He scored the equalising goal to force extra time in the last minute of regulation before creating a ton of danger during the game. Wirtz began the campaign, by scoring his team’s first goal of the tournament against Scotland. Despite the impressive individual show, the Germans crashed out of the competition thanks to a 119th-minute finish from Spain’s Mikel Merino.
