Rooney-Messi rivalry heats up ahead of friendly
After an average Euro 2012 for England, United shooter Wayne Rooney is eyeing some damage control.

Gothenburg, Sweden: The Wayne Rooney and Lionel Messi rivalry is going to be revived when Manchester United and Barcelona play in a pre-season friendly here on August 8. In their friendly last year, it was Alex Ferguson’s men who emerged victorious.

Even though it’s a friendly, expect both teams to put up their best show. Rooney was very average in the recently concluded Euro 2012 and he should look at the match as a big opportunity to restore his good name. Messi, on the other hand, will look to enhance his reputation as the world’s best. Brazil legend Ronaldo recently dubbed him the best player on the planet earth.

A little disconcerting news for the Red Devils before the tie is that their star veteran Ryan Giggs won’t feature in the match as he has been selected in Team GB for the London Olympics.

Announcing the game, United chief executive David Gill said, "Manchester United against Barcelona is one of the top fixtures in world football and we are delighted to work with GotEvent to bring this match to the beautiful city of Gothenburg.

"We have a large following throughout Scandinavia and it’s great that this match will form part of our preparations for the new season."

United will play Norway’s club side Valerenga a few days before the tie against Barcelona.
