It seems like the saga of gangster Tommy Shelby is far from over. Steven Knight, creator of Peaky Blinders, revealed to Birmingham World during the premiere of his latest BBC drama, The Town, that Cillian Murphy will reprise his iconic role in the upcoming film. Knight assured fans that Murphy is “definitely” returning and the filming is slated to kick off in Birmingham, UK, in September.
Murphy’s reprisal of his role as Tommy Shelby in the film adaptation doesn’t come as a surprise, considering the actor’s consistent stance of only returning if the script meets his standards. Originally airing on the BBC in 2013, the show gained international acclaim upon its arrival on Netflix. Despite the series concluding in April 2022, creator Steven Knight has repeatedly expressed his eagerness to continue Tommy’s story.
While Knight has been determined to turn Peaky Blinders into a film, he previously didn’t confirm whether Murphy would return as the Birmingham gang leader. During the red carpet of his new film, the filmmaker said, “He is definitely returning for it. We’re shooting it in September just down the road in Digbeth.”
In a different interview with Esquire, Knight had said, “The film, I know exactly what it’s about. And I know what two stories it’s going to tell. How the story will unfold, I don’t know. What will happen after that, I want that to depend on the film. For all we know somebody is going to pop out – I think I know who it’s going to be.”
Previously, in a conversation with Rolling Stones UK last year, Cillian Murphy expressed his interest in returning as Tommy Shelby in Peaky Blinders movie, but with a specific condition. He stated that he would love to continue if there was more story to tell and claimed that it has to be meaningful. Murphy praised the work of series creator Steven Knight, highlighting that he wrote 36 hours of television and ended the show on a high note.
Steven Knight initially revealed in July 2022 that a script for the film was in progress and wanted to shoot the series in locales where the real Peaky Blinders once operated, such as Digbeth and Small Heath. Now as the news about filming is confirmed, fans are eagerly waiting to witness the conclusion of Tommy Shelby’s iconic journey.
