1/3rd of night civic workers shirk duty

HYDERABAD: About a third of the sanitation workers employed/hired by the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation were found missing from work on the intervening night of Saturday and Sunday.The surprise inspection was carried out by the health and sanitation wing of the corporation in the core areas of the twin cities as per the instructions of commissioner, MT Krishna Babu.Additional commissioner (health & sanitation) L Vandan Kumar, assistant medical officers of health and assistant engineers formed seven teams and conducted surprise inspection of 77 night sanitation units in core areas of Circles 4, 5, 7, 8, 9, 10 and 18 from midnight to 5 am. Of the 1,232 workers, only 849 were seen doing work and 383 absent. The absenteeism was about 31.08 percent.Two of the 15 jawans, three of five supervisors and six of 53 private supervisors skipped their duties, Vandan Kumar told reporters.He said such a huge absenteeism was alarming and the GHMC would not tolerate it. Action would be taken against the absentees, he said.GHMC has been undertaking sweeping in the core areas of the twin cities during night time.
