To attain artistic excellence in Bharathanatyam, the empowerment of body and mind towards achieving their creative and expressive potential is linked to the dancer’s sense of self- identity.Witnessing Hariyum – Haranum presented by dancers Balagurunathan and Gayathri Balagurunathan (Kalakshetra trained senior dancers of merit) for the Narada Gana Sabha, one got to realise that Hari (Lord Vishnu), in the form of Krishna, and Haran (Lord Shiva) in the form of Nataraja, were one and the same. Visualising the episodes with music set by Bhagavathulu Seetharama Sharma, was a realistic experience. The essential significance of Shiva dance at Chidambaram, which is considered to be the source of all movements, within the universe, was brought out with grace and eloquence, synthesising with convincing Abinaya. The Keerthana of Gopalakrishna Bharathi in Raga Poorvikalyani was brought out with divine expressions in (Naadamudan Nathanadi Malarke Thunai), when the Lord dances for the benefit of the world. Taking the philosophical kirthana of legend vocalist MD Ramanathan, in (Hariyum – Haranum onrae) in Raga Atana, with captivating postures and expressive abhinaya, Balagurunathan presented the item, in a tellingly poignant fashion. The artiste showed his admirable understanding as to how the two can be fused. When Radhey Krishna (the divine lover) was presented, taking us through a plethora of emotions in abhinaya, Gayathri’s skills of presentation were more evident. It was evident that Gayathri was drawing her ‘minimalism’ for the idea of expressing emotions.
