TRIPUNITHURA: As the monsoon strengthened just within two days, the roads in the city as well as the city suburbs are turning to be a death trap for commuters, especially two-wheeler riders.  As almost all the roads in the city are in a pitiable state, with the very onset of monsoon, they become full of potholes. As the congested stretch from Pettah to North Fort Gate Junction is a straight road almost all the riders tend to speed here.Potholes began to appear on the very first day of the strong monsoon in this already congested narrow stretch.  During the daytime frequent traffic blocks make the journey through this pothole-filled road safe as no vehicle can pass through this stretch at a speed of higher that 30 km/hr.However during the night the lack of proper streetlights will certainly be a trap for two-wheeler riders. While trying to avert the potholes, larger vehicles knock down either the pedestrians or the two-wheelers.On Friday morning, at 5.15 am a father and daughter who were on their way back from Kochi to Udayamperoor, fell into a deep pothole right in the middle of the road near NF Gate. Aswathi, the pillion rider, who is working as a nurse in Bangalore, was thrown from the vehicle and admitted to the Medical Trust Hospital with serious injuries. Kamalakshan, her father, also suffered minor injuries.  “The two were lucky in that there were no speeding vehicles behind or in front of them, said a local who was involved in the rescue operation. During the night it is difficult to spot the series of potholes right in the middle of the roads leading to NF Gate, he said. School students on bicycles throng this road and the heavy vehicles which try to avoid these potholes may also be a threat to them.“The authorities are now waiting for a few more fatal accidents before they fill these pot holes temporarily using gravel and other unscientific methods,” said a motor mechanic near the junction who was witness to many accidents in the area.
