Thiruvananthapuram Contesting from prison, a man accused of chopping-off hand of a college professor for preparing a question paper with alleged derogatory references to Prophet Mohamed, has won from a block panchayat division in Ernakulam in the local body polls.
Anas won from Vanchinad division of Vazhakkulam block as a candidate of Socialist Democratic Party of India, the political arm of Popular Front of India (PFI), whose activists were allegedly behind attacking T J Joseph, a lecturer at Newman College in Thodupuzha.
Now in judicial custody and lodged in Viyyur central jail in connection with the case, Anas defeated the nearest UDF candidate by more than 1,000 votes, while the LDF candidate came third.
Anas had contested the seat after obtaining permission from the local court and could neither campaign for the poll nor cast his vote. He is the 47th accused in the case.
Joseph was attacked by suspected PFI members on July 4.
