VELLORE: Founder and president of Arunthathi Makkal Katchi (AMK) Valasai Ravichandran said here on Monday that his party would back the AIADMK in the forthcoming civic polls and the Tiruchy West bypoll. He said that the party had been fighting for the welfare and upliftment of the 50 lakh Arunthathiyar population in the State for the past 15 years. The previous DMK government had conceded to some of the demands of the party by allocating 3 per cent internal reservation for the Arunthathiyar community and Ravichandran was also made the chairman of the Tamil Nadu Leather Workers Welfare Board.Ravichandran said, “I came up with the suggestion of a free footwear scheme for school students, which, in turn, will provide a sustained employment people for the Arunthathiyar community.  But the DMK government did not pay heed to it. The 3 per cent reservation to our  community members was also not properly implemented by the DMK,” he added. Ravichandran further said that in the Assembly elections, his party had identified certain pockets of the State where it had a good winning prospects. However, the DMK was not inclined to it and as such, his party could not fight the elections, Ravichandran said. “The consequence was that the Arunthathiyar community was deprived of proper representation in the Assembly. Despite all this, we worked for the DMK in the Assembly elections,” he added.  “I now feel bad that I could not do anything good for my community during the DMK regime,” Ravichandran said. Our leaders will be meeting AIADMK chief J Jayalalithaa shortly,” he added.
