New Delhi: Heavy weight boxer Amritpreet Singh (91kg) became the second Indian pugilist to advance to the medal rounds after defeating Yousef Al-nubani of Jordan 16-9 in the quarter-finals of the ASBC Asian Youth Boxing Championship in Subic bay, Philippines on Wednesday.
Singh, the 2012 Junior National Championship gold medallist, made up for an early exit from the AIBA Youth World Boxing Championship in Armenia last year.
In an exciting encounter, the 18-year-old made a slow start to his quarter-final bout but soon gathered pace. After an even-stevens first round with both boxer scoring 4 points, Amritpreet took the game away from the Jordanian boxer by not allowing him many scoring opportunities.
He went on to make his place in the round of four with a 16-9 victory in the end. 2012 Aglorav Cup bronze medal winner Abhishek Beniwal (81kg) also made a place in the final four of the light heavy weight category by virtue of a bye. Both the boxers are slated to play in the penultimate round of the championship on Friday (15 March 2013).
Earlier in the tournament, six Indian pugilists also advanced to the quarter-finals of the championship, which will be played out in the Subic Gym later in the day.
Silver medallist at the 2012 Youth World Championships, Narender Berwal (+91kg) advanced to the quarters after drubbing Roshan Hettiarchchi of Sri Lanka. He now takes on Dastan Kurmanbetov from Kazakhstan in the next round.
Bronze medal winners at the 2012 Youth Worlds, Lalitha Prasad (49kg) and Sandeep Sharma (75kg) also made it to the round of eight after upsetting their respective opponents in the pre-quarters.
While Prasad won by virtue of points beating Zhalgas Seikdakhan of Kazakhstan, Sandeep overpowered Aiaman Iliasov from Kyrgyzstan by an RSC OC decision.
Prasad battles for the place in the round of four with Jun Engkang of Indonesia and Sandeep takes on Akmal Bekkosimov from Uzbekistan.
Dinesh (64kg) also made it past Asela Thuduwewatta of Sri Lanka to cement his place in the round of eight. Nagesh Kharare (60kg) and Manjeet Singh Panghal (69kg) too advanced to the quarter-finals of the event.
However, India suffered setbacks in the fly weight and the bantam weight division, with Kavinder Bisht (52kg) and Aman Indora (56kg) losing out in the first round of the championship.
Uttarakhand lad, Kavinder lost to Ian Clark Bautista of Philippines on count-back. He was leading 10-9 with seconds left on the clock but a counterpunching right-cross from Bautista left the score tied at 10-10.
In the end Bautista won 33-30 on count-back. Indora, the 2012 Aglorav Cup gold medallist, lost to Wang Long of China in another close encounter.
