BHUBANESWAR: The crackdown on Anna Hazare and his aides dominated the first day of the monsoon session of the Assembly which started on a stormy note on Wednesday with the BJD and the BJP MLAs condemning the action. The Congress members retaliated by storming into the well of the House demanding scrapping of the Sindol project, the proposal for which has set Western Orissa on fire. The uproarious scenes led Speaker Pradip Amat to adjourn the House twice after the question hour. An Opposition adjournment motion notice on drought could not be taken up for discussion because of the pandemonium. The House witnessed slogan-shouting by the BJP and the BJD MLAs, who described the action against Hazare as undemocratic and demanded a strong Jan Lokpal. As the question hour began, BJP Legislature Party leader K V Singhdeo and party members were on their feet dubbing the UPA Government at the Centre as “murderer of democracy.” Shouting slogans against Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Congress president Sonia Gandhi and the UPA, the BJP legislators stormed into the well demanding tabling of a strong Jan Lokpal Bill in Parliament. The slogans rocked the House almost throughout the question hour which the Speaker continued despite the protest.BJP-backed Independent MLA Pratap Sarangi, who also joined the protest, said outside the House that a discussion should be held in the Assembly and a censure motion adopted against the action on Hazare and his supporters. But the Congress MLAs participated in the question hour amidst the sloganeering by the BJP members in the well. When the question hour was about to end, the Congress MLAs rushed into the well showing placards demanding withdrawal of the Sindol project and shouting slogans. This forced the Speaker to adjourn the House for 15 minutes from 12.30 pm to 12.45 pm. When the House reassembled, the BJD MLAs started slogan-shouting against the Centre over the Hazare episode, leading to adjournment till 3 pm.
