BANGALORE: Mountains of waste tossed down and buried on the streets destroys the beauty of the landscape and needless to say does not paint a pretty picture. Litter at every corner is a common phenomenon in the Garden City today. Well, garbage and waste management has now become parlance for having a more serious approach towards living. With the trash vortex increasing in massive proportions; Bangaloreans now face the dilemma of responsibility versus proactive approach. City Express talks to commuters and residents residing in Koramangala 8th block to shed some light on the garbage issue in the area.“I use this particular stretch (Koramangala 8th Block towards Adugodi) everyday. And, I am often greeted with a huge pile of garbage and horrible stench right outside the Adugodi school. I fail to understand how no one is bothered about the unhygienic conditions prevalent here. One will always find cattle or stray dogs feeding off filth at any given time. Rarely, the entire area is cleaned up (relatively). However, within a few days, it gets back to how it originally was. I think it is about time that the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) take stern measures to clean up the area and ensure timely garbage disposal. How hard is it to provide a dustbin in the area? In fact citizens too should behave responsibly and not dump garbage wherever they please. The situation worsens when it rains and it definitely poses health hazards to everyone,” said Archana Singh, a commuter.Koramangala 8th Block seems to be the latest victim of debris and muck. The gigantic garbage patch on the road towards Adugodi is left unattended for months. Trash pile increasing at an exponential rate is a cause of concern for everyone. And, however, some of the residents are irked with the lackadaisical attitude of the BBMP officials; and also feel that more productive steps need to be taken in order to better the situation. “The BBMP needs to provide wastebins at every nook and corner of the city. Only then can we raise a hue and cry about citizens’ responsibility. Yes, people tend to be careless and do not think twice to dump waste all over the streets and roads. But we cannot deny the fact the whole situation can be monitored better if there were appropriate provisions provided for waste disposal,” said Piyush Goswami, a resident.  So, in the ensuing battle between man and garbage who will emerge triumphant? Only time will tell. The corporator of the area was unavailable for comment.
