Chennai: Over 80 workers of a right-wing group were arrested in Chennai on Monday when they attempted to hold a demonstration without police permission on the 18th anniversary of the Babri Masjid demolition.
In other parts of the state, Muslim organisations including Tamil Nadu Muslim Munnetra Kazhagam (TMMK) staged dharnas demanding the arrest of those indicted by the Liberhan Commission, which probed the demolition of the disputed structure.
More than 80 Hindu Munnani workers were arrested in Chennai when they attempted to hold a demonstration in Chennai without permission, police said.
However, no untoward incident was reported from any part of the state, they said.
In Coimbatore, over 1,500 TMMK workers staged a demonstration demanding the arrest of various leaders, including senior BJP leader LK Advani, for the demolition of the Babri Masjid.
Additional security personnel were deployed at important public places, including places of worship, bus stands and railway stations.
