Condemning Union Minister of State for Defence M M Pallam Raju’s statement that the Central Government would continue to train members of the Sri Lankan armed forces, VCK cadre attempted to burn his effigy in the city on Wednesday.
Raising slogans against the Centre, the cadre, who assembled near the Gandhipuram signal, attempted to burn an effigy of the minister. However, police intervened and foiled their attempt and arrested 12 cadre, including a woman.
Two Sri Lankan defence personnel - Major Dissanayaka Mohottalalage Vengra and Captain Hewawasam Kadaudage - are undergoing training at the Defence Services Staff College in Wellington, in Ooty, since May 19.
The city has been witnessing protests ever since information about the training spread on Saturday. The Thanthai Periyar Dravidar Kazhagam has announced that it would greet all Union ministers from the Congress with black flags whenever they visited the State. “The training given to the Lankan defence personnel is not going to be used against any other nation, but only against innocent Tamil fishermen who are facing frequent attacks from the SL forces. This is why we are strongly opposing it,” said its general secretary K Ramakrishnan in a statement on Wednesday.
The MDMK too has announced that it would block train movements on Thursday over the issue. In a statement, the party said it would block trains at Podanur and Coimbatore railway junctions on Thursday to pressure the Centre to send back the Sri Lankan defence personnel.
