VISAKHAPATNAM: A massive tree plantation programme will be launched by chief minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy in of December first week to make Visakhapatnam pollution free. Chairman of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Science and Technology, Environment and forests T Subbarami Reddy told reporters here on Tuesday that under the Green Visakha Project 40 lakh saplings would be planted over a period of five years, the largest scale of its kind in the country. In the first year, eight lakh saplings will be planted on premises of industries in the city.
The parliamentary committee, after a visit to the city on October 19 to 21, decided to make all the industries in the city participate in the massive drive for tree plantation.The committee has formed a subcommittee comprising the district collector, GVMC commissioner, Vuda vicechairman and membersecretary of the Pollution Control Board. It will visit the industries and submit a report to the standing committee.

According to Reddy, major industries are enthusiastic about India's largest tree plantation programme and have assured to plant various varieties of plants. The Visakhapatnam Steel Plant (VSP) will plant one lakh saplings, Visakhapatnam Port Trust 1.5 lakh, NPTC one lakh, HPCL 1.5 lakh and Hindustan Shipyard Limited 75,000. Many small and medium industries have also come forward to plant trees on their premises.
