KOCHI:The billiard games have made an entry into the city in a big way. Instead of hanging out at parks, museums and resorts, the GenNext can be now found flocking at the centres that host pool, snooker, billiards and nine-ball. Presently, there are four clubs hosting these games in a full swing.Madhu K S who runs Sixth Avenue Club said that people look at snooker as a rich man’s game. “It is just an old perception that such games are made for the people with heavy pockets. However, the fact is that clubs like ours are affordable for every one,” he said. When asked on the age group of the frequent visitors, he said, “Although, we have people from all age groups coming in here, it is the young men between 18 and 25 who drop in during the evening hours, especially from 5 pm to 9 pm.” “However, little kids and school students are not allowed as money is involved and the equipment used is expensive and needs care,” Madhu said.Sixth Avenue is the oldest club and was started in Kaloor 13 years back. Back then, it was called a rich man’s game and was exclusive to the rich at Regional Sports Centre. However, the time has changed and with the arrival of more clubs the game has become affordable for the commoners in the city. Cue Hub at Palarivattom, Pro Snookers on MG Road and the Boomerang in the Oberon Mall are the other clubs thronged by the youngsters. The games are priced at `60 to `200 per hour at different clubs.“We prefer snooker and pool games to outdoor games owing to our busy schedule coupled with the unavailability of the large spaces. The clubs have also turned into social hubs where we can meet, share and enjoy our thoughts. We get to meet people, make friends and unwind. Snooker playing is a perfect leisure game,” said Mathews who plays at Cue Hub. “I have made more than 100 friends after coming to this place. It is like a second home to me. However, loving this game and getting addicted to it are two different things,” said David who visits all the clubs. Also, the billiard games are slowly getting popular among girls. “The idea that girls cannot play or are not permitted to play snooker is wrong. It is actually more suited to women as it does not require much physical strength. Now, many girls are also seen attracted to the game” said Arathi, a engineering student, who plays the game at Oberon Mall
