CHENNAI: The boatman, who surrendered to the police after swimming back to the shore, was released on bail to attend his wife’s funeral on Monday. Police sources said that Hansar surrendered in Thirupalaivanam police station on Sunday night. He was visibly shocked over the incident. He was later booked under IPC section 304A (causing death by negligence). His wife Nazeera Banu was one among the 22 people who drowned. Her funeral took place in her native village Balakrishnapuram, New Gummidipoondi. “He was released on bail as he had to attend her funeral,” said V Vanitha, Superintendent of Police.The police said they have also decided to stop boating trips for tourists, until the government lays out rules and regulations. “If the fishermen buy proper passenger boats and life jackets and if the authorities grant permission, we will allow boat rides,” said Sylendra Babu, Inspector General of Police, North Zone, Tamil Nadu.
