With just three days to go for the commencement of the annual festival at Velankanni, the coastal town in the district is abuzz with activities. As pilgrims offer candles to the Lady of Good Health, traders have kept candles of various sizes and shapes for sale.
The annual festival is scheduled to commence on August 29 and concludes on September 8. Lakhs of pilgrims from various parts of the country are expected to throng the shrine. It has been estimated that nearly 25 lakh pilgrims would visit the Church between August 29 to the end of September.
The pilgrims offer candles to the Lady of Good Health as a part of thanksgiving. Traders have put up small shops for selling candles. As devotees feel delighted to offer special types of candles, candle-makers have shown great creativity in preparing candles of various shapes, colours and sizes. Candles resembling legs, hands, heart and other shapes are on sale. Devotees who have been cured of heart diseases are likely to offer heart-shaped candles as offering to the Lady of Good Health for answering prayers. Traders say that nearly 30 tonnes of wax was used to prepare candles. Depending on the size, shape and colour, the cost vary between `1 to `50 per piece.
