China slams US for honouring Dalai Lama
Dalai Lama received the US Congressional Gold Medal from Bush.

New Delhi: China is on the warpath with the US, a day after the Dalai Lama recieved the Congressional Medal of Honour at the White house in Washington.

Beijing called the award a serious violation of international relationships, and of commitments made by the United States government.

Beijing had issued several statements demanding the US abandon its plans to honour the exiled tibetan leader.

President Bush, who attended the ceremony, became the first sitting American President to share a stage with the Dalai Lama.

Dalai Lama, who has lived in exile in India since fleeing his predominantly Buddhist homeland in 1959 after a failed uprising against Communist rule, received the US Congressional Gold Medal from President George W Bush on Wednesday.

China, which considers the Dalai Lama a separatist, had already denounced the award as a "farce" that would hurt relations between Beijing and Washington.

According to news agency Reuters, Dalai Lama said that he had "no hidden agenda" in seeking greater autonomy. He also said Beijing's depiction of his motives was "unfounded and untrue" and asked US supporters to convince China he was sincere.
