THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: If traditional sporting events appear flat and unexciting for you, it’s high time you shift the focus from the not-so-luring sports variants to some real action packed, entertainment oriented games, like Roll Ball Skating.As the name implies, the game is a mix of roller skating and net ball, but that is not the end. Popular games like basketball and handball too get a judicious blending to form one of the popular new-generation games - roll ball.The public will get a chance to find out more about the ‘hybrid game’ when the sub-junior national championship commences on Friday at the Central Stadium here. Roll ball is a unique combination sporting event that uses the playing methodology of roller skating, basketball, handball and net ball.Each team comprises 12 players, of which six will be fielded. The team will have three forwards, two defenders and a goalkeeper. The players move in the field, of the size of a basketball court, on skates. They can dribble and pass the ball as in a basketball game before shooting it into the nets to score goals. The game is exciting and action-oriented since the entire movement of the players will be on skates.The game was devised by Pune-based skater Raju R Dabhade in 2003. "To perform well, the players need to be equally skilled in all the four associated games,” said D Hariharan, the convenor of the event. The event will be inaugurated by Food and Civil Supplies Minister Anoop Jacob.
