CHENNAI: A mobile air monitoring unit was launched by the Chennai Petroleum Corporation Limited (CPCL) at the Manali Government Higher Secondary School, on Friday. The state of the art air quality monitoring van, which will be used to monitor pollutants in CPCL’s premises in Manali, was launched at the function to mark the World Environment Day celebrations.The `1 crore van, fitted with sensors to guage pollutants, can also measure weather parameters.Minister for Backward Classes and Environment, TKM Chinnaiya, who presided the event and planted saplings at the school, emphasised the need to strike a balance between industrialisation and environmental safety, and lauded CPCL for its efforts to ensure environment safety.Noting that Manali is a “critical polluted area”, he urged CPCL and other industries in the area to take efforts to minimise pollution hazards.Minister of Legislative Assembly, K Kuppan, who was also present at the event, appealed to the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board to monitor the pollution levels in Manali and launch measures to ensure the safety of residents.K Balachandran, Managing Director of CPCL, said that CPCL was committed to doubling the green belt stretches to 100 acres by developing greenery in its desalination plant in Kattupalli.
