KOCHI: The minor niggles have been sorted out, and Cusat’s special innovation, the online CAT registration system is now back on track. Cusat is the only varsity in the country to have devised a system for online CAT registration. Now, with the arrival of a new 24-core hardware on Thursday, the server problems during registration in the past few days, have been resolved to a great extent.Last year, the National Informatics Centre (NIC) was entrusted with the task of conducting the online registration process. “But the academic admissions team had to work many days to manually upload photos and check challan payment,” said Sunil K Narayanan Kutty, Director, International Relations and Academic Admissions. The NIC was asked to look at various alternatives to deal with the issue, but the charges were too high.“So we thought of devising our own in-house system and it was developed by the Centre for Information Resource Management (CIRM),” Narayan Kutty said. Using ERP 5 software and 16-core server, the system was fine-tuned for uploading photos and payment of fee through ATMs.The registration went on smoothly for the first two days, after it commenced on January 15, but when the volume of applications uploaded went up, the system turned slow.An engine was secured from Bangalore and the system was fine-tuned further, but during peak hours, the response continued to be slow. “The offline mode is also active. So far 43,000 candidates have completed the first phase of registration, 19,000 have completed the second phase of uploading photos and signatures and 15,000 have completed the third phase, of which 7,000 have paid the fees through credit cards, he added.“It is commendable that Cusat has devised its own system, but they should have tried and tested the data-handling capacity before its launch. It would have saved many candidates of the trouble,” said Raju D Nair, a parent.Keeping in mind the time lost, the last date for registration has been extended to February 20.
