CHENNAI: The Employees State Insurance Corporation (ESIC) is mulling relaxation of norms to create dispensaries in naxal-infested and tribal areas, said Union Labour and Employment Minister Mallikarjun Kharge, who chaired the 155th meet of the ESIC here on Wednesday.Speaking to reporters, Kharge said that the ESIC had been seriously considering the move so as to have wider reach with successful implementation of the ESI scheme through expansion of infrastructure in such areas.“During the meeting, it was decided to relax the criterion for developing infrastructure in the North-Eastern States by almost 50 per cent, considering the scarcely-populated areas,” Kharge said.Sources said that the ESIC could set up a single-doctor dispensary if there were 1,000 insured persons (IPs), which was 1,500 insured persons before relaxation. For a 2-doctor dispensary, what used to be above 3,500 IPs was scaled down to 2,000 IPs; for a diagnostic centre, the number was reduced to 5,000 IPs from 10,000 IPs and for a 100-bed hospital it was reduced to 15,000 IPs from 25,000 IPs. Other issues discussed included expansion of ESIC services and offering better services to the staff covered under the scheme.
