Expert Shares The Significance Of Navagrahas In Temples
It is common for devotees to wonder if they should visit the main sanctum of the temple first or circumambulate the Navagrahas while visiting the temple.

Navagrahas are the nine planets that are worshipped in Hinduism. These celestial beings are believed to influence various aspects of our lives, such as health, wealth, love, and career. In many South Indian temples, there is a shrine dedicated to the Navagrahas. The idols are generally arranged specifically with the Sun God in the centre, Chandra to the East, Buddha to the South, Brihaspati to the West, Shukra in the North, Mangala to the South-East and Shani to the South-West, Rahu to the North-West and Ketu to the North-East. Every idol is known to have facial features and carvings that match the description in the scriptures.

Often, people wonder why the Navagrahas (the nine planetary deities) are present in temples. They also question the number of times one should circumambulate these Navagrahas in temples and the benefits of doing so. Parvathi Shambu Lingeshwara Temple’s priest, Ramalingaiah Shastri in an interview with Local18 explained this.

It is common for devotees to wonder if they should visit the main sanctum of the temple first or circumambulate the Navagrahas while visiting the temple. Addressing these doubts, Ramalingaiah Shastri shared that the correct way is to first circumambulate the temple, have the darshan of the deity in the sanctum and finally circumambulate the Navagrahas. Also, devotees can first circumambulate the Navagrahas, wash their feet and then proceed to the main sanctum. After the darshan of God, he advises against washing the feet again. He explained that the devotees have already received the blessings of the deity and washing the feet means the blessings may diminish.

Meanwhile, circumambulating the Navagrahas is believed to protect the devotees from any health issues and remove the negative effects of planetary positions like Mangal dosha or other graha doshas. One should walk around the Navagrahas 27 times as there are nine planets and three rounds per planet would mean 27. This is believed to bring good fortune.
