New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi here on Wednesday said there should not be any interference by the government in the working of the media.

“Media is responsible for upholding free speech,” he said during an address on National Press Day.

“Everybody makes mistakes. We make mistakes, you make mistakes, it is not right to judge the media just by its mistakes,” Modi added. He also said that the external control over press is bad for society.

Modi also expressed shock over killing of journalists in various parts of the country. “The news related to murders (of journalists) is really shocking and painful,” Modi added.
