The ULFA will be stopped in Assam at any cost, says Defence Minister A K Antony in Tezpur.

New Delhi: The screws are being tightened on the United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) and the Centre has announced that the rebel group will be stopped in Assam at any cost.

"The ULFA will not be able to carry ahead its heinous crimes and no quarter will be given to them," said Defence Miniser A K Antony in Tezpur, Assam, where the ULFA has murdered at least 67 Hindi-speaking people since Friday.

India will talk to Bangladesh and Myanmar about the presence of ULFA leaders in their territory, said Antony after a meeting with Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi, Army Chief Gen J J Singh and commanders of IV Corps, which leads anti-insurgency operations in upper Assam.

The Army, paramilitary forces and state police will attack ULFA hideouts in Tinsukia and Dibrugarh in upper Assam.

The Centre on Tuesday sent 10 more companies of paramilitary forces comprising 1,000 personnel to Assam. This is in addition to the 20 companies already sent to the state to fight the ULFA and protect Hindi-speaking people, particularly migrant workers from North India.

More central forces will be sent if a high-level meeting on January 12 by feels the need. Union Home Secretary V K Duggal will chair this meeting which will be attended by top security officials from Assam and the Centre.

The meeting will discuss measures to provide protection to the migrants in the sensitive areas, mostly in worst affected districts of Tinsuika, Dibrugarh and Dhemaji.

The Assam Government has been asked to strengthen patrolling, set up more pickets and improve intelligence gathering.

Security arrangements for the forthcoming National Games in Assam, which the ULFA has threatened to disturb, is also high on the agenda at Friday's meeting.

Sources said the Centre was also concerned over the issue of providing security to workers engaged in the task of laying broad gauge line between Lumding and Silchar.
