The hackers say they posted the Snapchat usernames and phone numbers online to "raise awareness."

New Delhi: In an apparent leak, usernames and phone numbers of 4.6 million Snapchat users have been posted online by unidentified hackers.

The hackers say they had accessed the information "through the recently patched Snapchat exploit" and were sharing the information online to "raise awareness on the issue," alleging that Snapchat "was too reluctant at patching the exploit until they knew it was too late."

According a message posted on, the now suspended, snapchatdb.info website, the last two digits of the phone numbers have been censored to minimize spam and abuse, but they have kept an window open to release the full version.

Two developers Will Smidlein and Robbie Trencheny have developed a tool to let you check if your Snapchat account has been compromised in the leak. Visit GS Lookup and enter your Snapchat username to find out.

Snapchat is a popular photo sharing app that lets users share photos and videos with captions that automatically self-destruct after a duration set by the sender.
