New Delhi: The Delhi High Court on Tuesday dismissed a PIL alleging that the July 12 Metro pillar mishap at Zamrudpur took place due to non-compliance of the safety measures.
Six persons were killed in the accident.
A Bench comprising Chief Justice AP Shah and Justice Manmohan rejected the petition filed by residents of Greater Kailash locality in south Delhi.
The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) counsel submitted an affidavit before the court containing present status of the case in a sealed cover and refuted the allegation of lack of safety measures to construct the pillars.
The DMRC submitted before the High Court that it has taken all safety measures for construction of Metro pillars and a committee has been set up to probe the Zamrudpur metro mishap.
In the petition, the residents alleged the DMRC failed to comply with the High Court's previous order directing them to consider the residents' objections and follow international standards for construction of pillars.
“DMRC is not fully equipped to prevent the disaster,” the petition said and suggested adoption of Ultrasonic Technique instead of Mirror Technology, which the Corporation is relying on, to analyse the crack in the pillar.
The residents raised objections over the presence of Rajan Kataria, a DMRC engineer, in the inquiry committee saying he may be biased and may not be able to judge fairly the present situation.
They sought a fresh independent committee of experts excluding Kataria from inspection of safety of Metro pillars, especially for the Badarpur Metro corridor linking Defence Colony to Nehru Place.
