Panaji: It was 'Gandhigiri' preached in popular Bollywood film 'Lage Raho Munnabhai' that gave girls an important tip on how to gauge their prospective groom's nature. It also advised many in a dilemma on ways to deal with irksome neighbours and the best non-violent method to tackle corruption. At a time when nobody thought of Gandhian values, 'Gandhigiri' left an indelible impact on the minds of all those who watched 'Lage Raho Munnabhai'.
With 'Lage Raho Munnabhai', Gandhigiri entered the psyche of youngsters who felt violence was the only way to make achieve their goals. Just like many cinegoers who admitted that Gandhian values entered their conscience after they watched 'Lage Raho Munnabhai', filmmaker Vidhu Vinod Chopra shared with us the lessons he learned while making the film. 'I'm very short-tempered. I understood the whole idea of staying non-violent while working on the 'Lage Raho Munnabhai'. It still teaches me several lessons. Each time I watch it, there is something new to imbibe," he said.
As Vidhu tells us, making Gandhi so 'cool' wasn't easy. "Honestly speaking, it was both difficult and scary to make Gandhi cool. We dint know if we would be banned, abused and run down or be seen as traitors to the cause," he added.
Vidhu Vinod Chopra was accompanied by 'Lage Rago Munnabhai' director Rajkumar Hirani to a special discussion on the legacy of popular filmmaker Richard Attenborough at IFFI.
