Hyderabad: Pakistan cricketer Shoaib Malik on Monday said he was in India not only to marry Sania Mirza, but also to clear his name from the controversy surrounding his alleged first marriage to Ayesha Siddiqui.
Shoaib and Sania addressed the media together for the first time after they announced their wedding will be held on April 15.
"I am not leaving the country. I will cooperate with the Indian government and the police till this matter is sorted. I will follow the rules," Shoaib told a large contingent of reporters in Hyderabad, while Sania stood by his side.
"I am innocent, I haven't done anything wrong," Shoaib said outside the Mirza residence here, hours after the police quizzed him on complaints from Siddiqui's family.
Shoaib further said that he was surprised that while Ayesha had been making allegations, she had not yet come out in front of the camera. He brushed aside suggestions that she was suffering from depression and said that no one suffering like that could speak to the press on the phone for hours.
"Why is she hiding behind the camera and making accusations. Why doesn't she come in the open and say whatever she wants to. I am standing in front of all of you but where is she? Why is she giving long interviews from behind the screen," said Shoaib.
Sania also fielded questions from the press and defended Shoaib saying that the marriage will not be postponed.
"We are here because we want to clear his name and as an Indian it is my responsibility to let the police investigate. Our family knows the truth and it will come out," she said.
But Sania admitted she was upset over the developments.
"Of course I am upset but we are happy we are together. We want to remember this as a happy occasion. We don't want to remember (it) for bad things or negative things," said the Indian Tennis star.
