Educationist Jeppiar, who was arrested on August 9 this year in connection with the death of nine migrant workers in a stadium wall collapse in the JPR Institute of Technology at Kunnam village nearSunkuvar Chatram on August 6, was granted interim conditional bail bythe Madras High Court on Tuesday.Justice GM Akbar Ali, who granted the bail till August 30, said thatJeppiar should execute a personal bond for Rs 1 lakh with two sureties each for a like sum. He should be admitted to the CMC hospital in Vellore for treatment and co-operate with the enquiry.
The college management should deposit Rs 2.5 lakh each as ex-gratia in the names of the legal heirs of each of the deceased and Rs 50,000 each in the names of the injured. If no body comes forward to receive the amount, the Judicial Magistrate should deposit the same in any of the nationalised bank for one year.
The judge made it clear that the amount payable to the legal heirs of the deceased and the injured victims was as ex-gratia payment and such payment/disbursal was independent of any other claim that might beraised by the members of the bereaved families/injured persons under any other law in force. Directing the police to file a status report of the investigation, the judge posted the case on August 30. The judge granted bail to Jeppiar’s wife Ramibai, who apprehended arrest in the same case.
