The Pitru Paksha Mela is currently taking place in Gaya attracting pilgrims from across India and abroad. People come to this Mela to perform Pind Daan for their ancestors. So far, approximately 8 lakh pilgrims have participated in this ritual. The fair will continue till October 2.
Notably, ten international pilgrims performed Pind Daan at Dev Ghat on Monday. They were from countries like Africa, Guyana, Ghana, Russia, Ukraine, Kazakhstan, and South Africa. They performed all the rituals as per Sanatan tradition. The ceremonies were conducted by their priest, Acharya Loknath Gaur. The Pind Daan was performed at the Vishnupad Temple, near the banks of the Phalgu river.
Some pilgrims expressed that they feel a sense of peace after visiting Gaya, where it is believed that ancestors attain salvation. Some of these pilgrims have visited Gaya earlier to perform Pind Daan for their ancestors. Many of them have been staying in Vrindavan for years.
All the pilgrims have come to Gaya through their Guru. During Pind Daan, women pilgrims were seen performing the ritual in traditional saris, following Indian customs.
Julia, a pilgrim from Ukraine, shared that this is her fourth visit to Gaya, where she is performing Pind Daan for her ancestors. She said that she feels a sense of peace during her stay at Gaya. Julia also appreciated the kindness and support of the local people and said that they come forward to help them.
Vishnu, a Nigerian resident has been living in Vrindavan for many years. He shared that he has adopted Sanatan Dharma. Vishnu highlighted that Gaya is a significant place for the salvation of ancestors, where Lord Vishnu is believed to be present. He expressed that visiting the city is a joyful experience for him. He also highlighted the kindness of the locals.
Acharya Loknath Gaur, the priest who oversaw the Pind Daan process, stated that the ten pilgrims have come to Gaya through their Guru who promotes Sanatan Dharma abroad and have guiding them to the holy city to perform Pind Daan for their ancestors.
