'Is Apology Same Size As Advertisements?' SC Raps Ramdev, Balkrishna In Pantanjali Misleading Ads Case

The Supreme Court on Tuesday emphasised on the protection of all consumer groups including children, babies, and women during the hearing of the misleading ads case against Patanjali Ayurveda. While hearing the case, the bench asked asked that whether the size of the apology was of the same size as its advertisements or not.

The court also noted that the ‘Union Government must wake up to this’ and take strong action on the matter.

Patanjali Ayurveda issued an apology on Tuesday while stating that they would not commit any such mistake in the future. This came ahead of the Supreme Court’s hearing over the misleading ads case against the medicine company.

Baba Ramdev and Patanjali MD Acharya Balkrishna have been asked to be personally present before the Court for Tuesday’s hearing.

A bench comprising of Justices Hima Kohli and Ahsanuddin Amanullah is currently hearing the matter at the court.

  • Justice Kohli, while hearing the case, said, “I want to see the actual size of the ad.” The judge further asked if the size of the apology was of the same size as its advertisements or not.
  • “Now we are looking at everything… we are looking at children, babies, women, and no one can be taken for a ride and the Union government must wake up to this,” the bench said on Tuesday.
  • In an ad published in a national daily, Patanjali has said it respects the Supreme Court’s statue. The ad read, “We tender our heartfelt apology for the mistakes committed in publishing ads and holding press conferences despite the assurances by our counsel. We are committed not to repeat this mistake.”
  • On April 2, the court strongly criticised Ramdev and Balkrishna, dismissing their apology as “lip service”.
  • The SC, however, refused to accept the affidavits tendering unconditional apologies and asserted that the court was ” not blind” and “it did not want to be generous”.
  • In two separate affidavits filed in the apex court, Ramdev and Balkrishna tendered unqualified apology for the “breach of the statement” recorded in the November 21 last year order of the apex court.
