Jammu: The rains have stopped and the floodwaters are receding in Jammu. But the state is now faced with acute water shortage as the oldest pump-house in the area has collapsed due to recent floods.
While the state government is trying to solve the problem, the shortage is likely to continue for at least three-months.
"We have short and medium term programs. 5-10 boring wells will be dug and a filtration plant will be installed," said J&K Chief Minitser, Ghulam Nabi Azad.
While the state is facing a daily shortage of over 26 lakh litres of water, people are busy stocking up clean drinking water, which the administration is supplying on every alternate day.
"At present the requirement is that of 70 lakh gallons of water. We will give water on alternate days and slowly the supply will be augmented. We have requested the public to store water and use it judiciously," Public Health and Engineering Department Officer V K Puri said.
The Public Health and Engineering Department has in the meantime promised to supply water tanks on every alternate day and has asked people to use water judiciously.
"We have heard there will be severe water shortage ahead. So we've already started filling buckets and utensils. But for how long can this water supply that is our apprehension," says Anjali Mahajan, a local resident.
The main water pumping station and filtration plant in the area, which was catering over 35 per cent of Jammu’s total water supply, collapsed on Wednesday.
The pump-house was in a bad condition ever since it got damaged in the earthquake. No repairs were done and as a result it could not hold out the rising waters of Tawi river.
