Mayor Saidai S Duraisamy said that the Corporation was taking the issue of garbage very seriously.

Promising that the integrated solid waste management system will be up and running within the next three or four months, Mayor Saidai S Duraisamy said here on Friday that the Corporation was taking the issue of garbage very seriously.

Speaking on the final day of a beach clean up drive organised by the Lions Club International in collaboration with the Chennai Corporation and Global Safety Trust, a non-government organisation, the Mayor said that public’s responsibilities also played a part when it came to the disposal of garbage. “Inspite of our best efforts there are still problems with disposal of waste. Everyone involved has some responsibilities that come in during the waste disposal process. They should be fulfilled,” he said.

More than 1,200 students from the National Service Scheme (NSS) teams of Queen Mary’s College, MGR Janaki College, Stella Maris College, Women’s Christian College and Presidency College among others collected around 750 kilos of garbage that had accumulated at the Marina. The students received a certificate from the Mayor for their participation. R Palamalai, district governor of Lions Club International, said that it was joint initiative.
