KOCHI: This temple of learning has initiated many into the world of letters and knowledge. The Kallil Government Higher Secondary School in Methala, Perumbavoor, is all set for celebrations as it hits a century. Set up in 1912, the school has come a long way. “Kalil Pisharady who owned acres of land in this part set up a school in the temple ‘oottupura’. The thatched structure which housed lower primary classes was the sole school in the precincts for long. Later on it came under the government and has been seeing steady progress,” said N N Kunju, PTA president. As part of the year-long celebrations, a language workshop will kick-start on Monday. “To mark the centenary celebrations, a camp titled ‘Bhasha Kalvikam’ will be organised from Monday in which students can explore their skills in three languages- Malayalam, Hindi and English and probe their theatrical space,” said Suresh K K, programme convener. Experts will guide students delve into the language and understand the different sides of characterisation, script, dialogue and all that goes into direction of a play, he said. Theatre artiste Ajayan G, will guide students in English, Mathew Cherian, headmaster, Edappally Upper Primary School, will deal with English and Sunil Kumar of Aluva block resource centre and Chandran K P from Idukki will handle Hindi classes. Other teachers of the school will also be participating. The camp is conceived in such a way that both teachers and students can hone their skills. About 180 students from Class IV to Class IX are expected to participate in the 10-day long camp which will be open from 10 am to 4 pm. “It’s open to all students but many are already engaged in other vacation activities. The best among the lot will be selected for staging the play later. The classes are free of cost as the PTA is bearing the expenses. Food will also be provided,” said Suresh. Kallil has made a mark in both academics and other activities. “We used to get cent per cent but last year only 98 per cent passed. Students fared well for Plus-Two in two streams - Commerce and Science - offered. Students are good in extra-curricular activities. As there is no play ground, they are a bit backward in sports,” said Principal V Vasanthakumari. Headmistress Seena Thomas said that LKG and UKG will be introduced from the new academic year. “English medium introduced in Class V last year will be extended to Class VI this year. The school which has about 1000 students is like a huge family,” she said.
