A 34-year-old man was assaulted and his clothes were torn on Monday night in Karnataka’s Haveri district over allegations that he helped his nephew elope with a girl, who was engaged to someone else. The victim, Prashant Nagappa Kabbar, is a member of Mudenur gram panchayat in Haveri district’s Ranebennur taluk. He is undergoing treatment at a Haveri hospital.
Quoting Prakash, a TOI report said his nephew Prakash had been in a relationship with a girl from neighbouring Chalageri village for some time. The girl’s family, however, got her engaged to another boy around 20 days ago against her wish.
On the other hand, sources claimed that the couple, belonging to the Dalit community, reportedly visited the SP’s office in Haveri and sought security saying they got married at a temple on Monday.
“It is learnt that a conciliatory meeting had taken place in the village recently and the girl’s relatives had requested the boy’s family to send the girl home. However, the girl did not return home, triggering a confrontation,” Haveri Superintendent of Police Anshu Kumar was quoted by TOI as saying.
The incident surfaced shortly after a woman in Karnataka’s Belagavi was allegedly assaulted, paraded naked and tied to an electric pole after her son eloped with a girl, whose engagement was fixed to someone else. The incident took place last week.
After 24-year-old Ashok and 18-year-old Priyanka belonging to the same community and village eloped together, the boy’s family attacked the boy’s house and assaulted his mother.
The attackers then dragged the boy’s mother away, allegedly paraded her naked and tied her to an electricity pole. Police rushed to the spot and set the victim free.
At least seven people were arrested in connection with the case.
Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah reacted to the “inhuman” incident and assured that “strict action” will be taken against the perpetrators.
“This has made the whole society bow their head in shame. Our government will not tolerate such heinous acts for any reason. Several people have already been arrested in connection with the case. It is our full responsibility to provide justice to the aggrieved family by taking action to ensure that the culprits are punished severely,” Siddaramaiah said in an X post.
