School Headteacher Shankar said that this year's mangoes were auctioned in the presence of education department officials and villagers.

At a time when the world is filled with unsettling news, stories of compassion remind us of the innate goodness that resides within humanity. A recent touching story from Karnataka has captured the attention and admiration of people worldwide as an inspiring act of kindness. A man from the Kolar district donated land to a government school after planting mango trees, so that the school could earn money.

According to reports, in 1965, Chikkasiddappa, a resident of Avalakuppa village, Srinivaspur taluka of Kolar district in Karnataka, thought that he should contribute something to his village. Realising the importance of education, he donated 10 acres of land to the government junior primary school in Dammur. He did not leave the land empty; instead, he planted mango saplings there so that the mongo plants could bear fruit and the school could money from them.

Reports suggest that when the mango season comes, the school earns a profit from the mango cultivation. Besides this, the school is also earning a good income through an open mango auction. The school earned Rs 5.2 lakh in this year’s auction. One-third of the auction amount is earmarked for the school. The remaining amount goes to the person taking care of the grove.

After Chikkasiddappa, now his son Mulavagilappa, who is 52 years old, is looking after the grove. Headteacher Shankar shared in a recent media interaction that this year’s mangoes were auctioned in the presence of education department officials and villagers. He added that are 12 students in the school from 1st to 5th class. Earlier, the number of students was very high. But due to the rise of private schools in the neighbourhood, school enrollment has declined, Shankar added.

The mango auction amount is kept in the joint bank account of the SDMC chairman and headmaster. It is used to provide books, uniforms and other essentials to school children and to take them on excursions. Around Rs 4 lakh have been deposited in the account now.

The mango harvest has started in Srinivaspur taluk of Kolar district, where farmers grow mangoes and earn income. Apart from this, a junior primary school in Kolar district also has an annual income due to mango yield. In Survey No. 95 of Govt. Kannada Junior Primary School of Avalakuppa Village, Hodali Gram Panchayat, Srinivasapur Taluk, Kolar, situated on a 10-acre plot of land, the mango plantation is harvested by the Education Department officials and SDMC in the school premises like every year. Meanwhile, recently an open auction process was conducted last Wednesday.
