Kumble has had a great match and my heartiest congratulations to him on taking 500 Test wickets. It is a great achivement and over the years he has proved to be the most reliable strike bowler for India.
Words cannot describe his value in the Indian team.
But after his great effort the Indian batsmen ruined the day with an inept display. Time and again I have said that a positive approach will bring good results and today if the Indian batsmen had gone out and played positively, India would have been in the drivers seat.
However that was not to be and the primary reason was that our batsmen showed too much respect to England bowlers. When you bat for over 50 overs there is always the likelyhood that the bowler will send down a wicket taking ball. And that is what happened today.
India scored too slowly and when you are not hitting the bad balls, the bowlers gain in confidence and find their rhythm.
Sachin Tendulkar was a classic example of how not to bat in a Test match. He was too cautious and paid the price.
I had expected that Wasim Jaffer, after his good batting at Nagpur, would bat with confidence but he crawled to 31 runs and it looked as if he was playing to save his place in the team.
The way England bowled to Jaffer, it was clear that they had worked him out and were not going to bowl on his legs, which is his strength.
Even Virender Sehwag was not given any width outside the off-stump to play his cuts and slap shot over the close-in fielders.
All that Indian batsmen needed to do was to play their shots and the game would have firmly swung India's way.
But now England have got a good hold on the match and if tommorrow they pick uip some quick wickets, who knows India could be satring down the barrel.
Todays game has shown that cricket is really a game of glorious uncertainties.

Today was a great day for Indian bowlers and they bowled their hearts out to restrict England for just 300. Anil Kumble and the pacers especially young Munaf Patel did a great job.
