A 35-year-old contract labourer died of asphyxiation after he slipped and fell into a pit at a flyover construction site in Vyasarpadi here on Wednesday.

Police said Babu, of Salem, had been engaged at the site since work began a year ago. A drainage line had to be shifted for the construction of the flyover.

The area had turned slushy due to the sudden rains. Babu, who had been working there, slipped and fell unnoticed into a pit dug for drainage work.

His body weight pushed him further down as mud and slush piled over him.

Babu struggled in the pit for more than an hour before he was noticed by local residents who called the fire and rescue services.

By the time he was pulled out of the pit at 6 pm, he had died of asphyxiation, police said.

Babu is survived by his wife and two daughters who reside in Salem. Residents blamed bad lighting and lack of proper road for the mishap. “The lane has no streetlights. It is in an extremely bad condition due to the flyover work.

There is no road and when it rains and it becomes impossible to navigate the area. This must serve as a wake up call for the authorities,” said Ghisulal Jain, a resident of the area.
