New Delhi: Leonardo da Vinci's most famous painting Mona Lisa could very possibly be the first stereoscopic image in world history. Researchers Claus-Christian Carbon and Vera M Hesslinger believe so.
Like many of Leonardo da Vinci's works there exist also copies of the Mona Lisa that were produced in the studio of the great Italian creator and inventor, but what is special about a rediscovered studio copy that was presented to the public in 2012 is that the copy not only mirrors its famous counterpart superficially it also features the very same corrections to the lower layers indicating that da Vinci and the 'copyist' must have elaborated their panels simultaneously.
The researchers have observed that that both versions of the Mona Lisa differ slightly in perspective and the disparity between both paintings mimics the difference in perspectives between a pair of human eyes.
This means that the two paintings, one by Leonardo da Vinci and another by an apprentice could together form the first 3D image in world history.
